On Air Design Made By CHBP

The task to produce an On Air Design creates an atmosphere of euphoria in our office. A thing of its own, since the visual design of a broadcast has a certain connection to a commercial clip—but it must never be understood and developed as such. An issue of ambivalence, being a brand project and a culture project at the same time. A regular broadcast mirrors a cultural space in a specific way with its daily in- and output of the present while building up a history of its own, e.g. "Hier und Heute" of the WDR, a show already existent for 50 years. This is where our idea of »Zeitgeist« regarding On Air Design enters the arena and the intensive collaboration with the network station begins. Instead of a particle accelerating overkill of mainstream design we develop a photo/graphic concentration giving the requirements of the content an adequate cinematic form. But please: see for yourself.

We start our selection of On Air Designs with the »Kanzlerbungalow«:

After the fall of the berlin wall in 1989 and the decision of the goverment to move the capital from pittoresque Bonn to the ”poor but sexy city" Berlin, the former bed of chancellors Schmidt and Kohl in the »Kanzlerbungalow« remained empty. The history laden spot was the ideal place for the show of the same name, a political magazine of the WDR staged weekly at the original location. CHBP developed and produced the On Air Design (imagery, logo, script) breathing the semitransparent architecture of Sep Ruf (1963), shot on 35mm with a David Lynch smile.

Marc Comes' first collaboration with the WDR won the Eyes & Ears Award 2003 in Munich in the category "best feature or broadcast opener".

Viva La VIVA+

Opener for the VIVA plus Short Formats

VIVA Plus was the sister of the music television VIVA. In 2002 CHBP produced a line of openers for hot themes in sport, technics, celebrities and others. This short infotainment feature named short formats and the paramount directive in the use of asthetics was: Perceptual congruence. See the complete short format compilation.

Fresher. Younger. Clearer.

ARD Morgenmagazin gets a refreshed Design

The First German Television Program ARD starts the day with the Morgenmagazin (morning magazine). The Morgenmagazin is an infotainment classic featuring news, ideas, trends, entertainment and reaches an audience of 3 million people from 5:30 to 9 A.M. daily. In cooperation with the design department of the WDR CHBP conceived and produced the new redesign, a revision of the 2005 On Air Design which was also done by CHBP. "There were two demands when we created the first design: the orange as an icon and the morning situation at home. We depicted this with things that were handy "On Location". Soft, dozy, casual. Sharp details in the front while the background of the image is gently blown away. The new design works just the same, but fresher, younger, clearer, even more staged and sharper." Marc Comes

What´s Going On In NRW?

The »Actual Hour« format

The »Aktuelle Stunde« is the mother ship in the family of the regional NRW formats. The trailer focuses on people in the panorama of NRW.

The Art In The West

The cultural magazine of the WDR

CHBP produced its first High Definition trailer for the WDR in 2004. Central place of the shooting was the »Vierscheibenhaus«, one of the main WDR buildings in Cologne. According to the different formats of Westart, there are two versions of the trailer. Passing people recognizing reflections of "cultural scenes", which are appearing in the glass facade...

The Re-Design Of The Re-Design

»Hier und Heute« refreshed 2006

With its »short film report« concept, »Hier und Heute« is one of the most traditional features of the German TV (first broadcasted in 1957). Today, it will be one of the first to change the format to 16:9 for his daily reports. In collaboration with the design section of the WDR, CHBP developed the new HDTV opener. The original classic theme of Hier und Heute (Robert Schumann, »Rheinische«) is the leitmotif of the Director's Cut, a flight over North Rhine-Westfalia. See also our first Re-design 2003 below.

Here And Today

The »Hier und Heute« Opener 2003

With its "short film report" concept, »Hier und Heute« is one of the most traditional features of the German TV (first broadcasted in 1957). In a key scene, a former opener of the 70´s featured an aerial shot of Cologne and its cathedral. This childhood experience of Marc Comes is being staged again, in combination with the waterlines of NRW.

An Orange A Day Keeps The...

CHBP did the first Design for the ARD Morgenmagazin 2005

CHBP has developed a gentle, light and impressionistic visual realm for the television program featuring the »orange«. Everyday moments of the morning hours were composed as atmospheric images using the new CI colors of the Morgenmagazin. Our Director's Cut combines the various openers related to different topics of the three hour program.

The Eye Of The WDR

Our Compilation of Station ID´s

WDR is the biggest station within the ARD and belongs to the group of regional public broadcasters in Germany. WDR Fernsehen sees itself as a journalistic television, i.e. a journalistic perspective on social, political and cultural life determines both programme and content. Its widest ranging programmes Hier und Heute, Aktuelle Stunde, Lokalzeit, WDR punkt are the regional centre-pieces in the coverage of daily news concerning the people of the most populated state of Germany, Northrhine-Westphalia (NRW).

CHBP - with the support of the designers and editors of WDR - designed and filmed thirteen programme openers and closers for the above mentioned programmes on the basis on an overall re-design concept for WDR Fernsehen. The idea of "the land under the skies of NRW" served as a conceptual common denominator for a photographic language which aims at assigning the programmes in an unambiguous manner to the land - out of NRW, for NRW. Karin Sarholz (Head of Presentation and Programme Design) decided for Marc Comes of CHBP as becoming "the eye of WDR" in order to present the family of regional programmes in a look as homogeneously as possible. However, the differentiation within the familiy itself is achieved by an alternation of the focus in accordance with the respective geographic challenge, i.e. metropolitan programmes' openers display a much closer perspective than those of state-wide programmes.

CHBP shot over 100 images in NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia) for the Vertical Trailer and Station ID´s of the WDR (Westdeutscher Rundfunk). We have selected our favourites in a one minute movie with the music of Piethopraxis.
